I gave a talk to MapCamp 2022, called ‘Stealing ideas for a book using Wardley Mapping.’ I’ve included a video that has similar content to the talk I gave. It covers how I learned from an expert and mapped out the contents of a book about how I learned.
I’d been busy integrating other peoples ideas into something useful. Explaining how the ideas come together to meet a user need, that people recognise.
A map of doing things to meet a user need might look like this.
All of the Orange Dots on the drawing above can be other peoples ideas or skills.
This looks like a ‘Value Chain’ for Wardley Mapping.
What’s Wardley Mapping all about?
Wardley Mapping is literally about
visualising how ‘stuff’ comes together to meet a user need
how the whole thing changes over time
how the ‘stuff’ changes and evolves from ‘ideas’ to ‘commodities’
what your environment looks like
What your options in the future might be
It’s a pretty good fit for visualising ideas for books and courses. The Wardley Mapping community is also currently pushing the boundaries of what Mapping can be used for.
Mapping a practical book might start like the image below
User Needs, if you have them yet, go at the top. Ideas and skills that combine to meet the user need are shown below.
At the bottom are the ideas that are fundamental to meeting the user need.
I’ll be running a workshop on Drawing your Book at The Interintellect soon.
If you’d like to kick the tyres of the latest ideas, mapping can help.
Bye for now!
